Understanding RTO
Return to Origin (RTO) occurs when a courier attempts delivery but fails, causing the package to be returned to the seller. In India, where Cash on Delivery (COD) dominates, RTO rates can sometimes exceed 30%. Every RTO costs the seller forward shipping fees, return shipping fees, packaging costs, and potential inventory damage. Reducing RTO is paramount for survival.
Top Strategies to Reduce RTO
- Address Verification: Use APIs or manual checks to ensure the provided pincode and address are complete and service-able.
- Order Confirmation: Implement automated WhatsApp or SMS flows to confirm COD orders before dispatch. Cancel orders if the customer does not confirm.
- Fast Dispatch: The longer a customer waits for their order, the higher the chance of buyer's remorse. Dispatch within 24 hours.
- Pre-paid Incentives: Offer a 5% discount or free shipping if the customer pays online instead of using COD. Pre-paid orders have an RTO rate of less than 3%.
- Packaging Quality: Damaged packages are often rejected by customers. Invest in sturdy corrugated boxes for fragile items.
